With the New Year, the ACNC has started strong with over 40 new charities registered, a 'user friendly' website and community presentations across Australia.

All charities in the next few weeks will be contacted by mail and asked to confirm their details. In the new world of ACNC regulation, this will be the first test of how the ACNC will deal with charities and their diversity and challenges.

One of the key tasks of the Commission is to ensure a reduction in red tape for the sector through the implementation of the Charity Passport and other related initiatives (eg 'one stop shop' and red tape reduction). It will be critical that the sector keeps the Commissioner and the Government accountable for the achievement of these goals.

As charities come to term with the practicalities of the new regulator, it is clear that the ACNC will need to be an effective advocate for its position as the regulator of the sector.

The red tape reductions within its objects and the competing statutory obligations of various federal and state organisations will become practical challenges for the ACNC as it navigates its way through the existing environment.
