Release Date: 14 October 1998

Hedge Fund Association Chairman Dion Friedland will address the Shorex '98 International Money Show in London on Wednesday 21 October 1998 and lead a one-day series of talks by prominent hedge fund managers to examine the current state of the hedge fund market. This comes in the aftermath of LTCM's near collapse and widespread calls for tougher regulations.

Are all hedge funds inherently risky? How much do they differ from one another? And how far are they to blame for current chaos in the financial markets? These, as well as the prospects for the future, are the issues that Shorex '98 and the Hedge Fund Association will address.

It is estimated that there are 3000-5000 hedge funds world-wide, with between 250 and 400 billion dollars of assets under management. Shorex '98 will examine in detail the myth and mystery attached to the industry playing a vital role in how modern economies function.

Other speakers on hedge funds include Harry Groenert, Managing director of Princeton Economics International, perhaps the largest global advisory firm in the world, Peter Lusk, Chief Operating Officer of Forstman, leading US mutual and hedge fund manager, Felix Zulauf, of Zulauf Investment Management, and David Friedland, President of Magnum U.S. Investments, part of the Magnum Group, another leading hedge fund group.

They and other leading hedge fund managers are exhibiting at Shorex '98 to answer questions from financial advisers, financial intermediaries, and private investors. Private banks have in recent years added a wide range of hedge funds to their portfolio of investment vehicles to offer to their HNWIs (high net worth individuals) clients.

These presentations are part of the world's largest display of offshore and international financial services and investment products, Shorex 98. The event, open to the public, is primarily aimed at private and institutional investors as well as financial intermediaries. It takes place from Tuesday 20th to Thursday 22nd October 1998 at the Business Design Centre in London. Participants at SHOREX '98 are fund managers, international banks, private banks, stock exchanges, offshore service providers, insurance firms, pension funds, trust companies, law firms, international tax planners and venture capitalists. More information on the participants can be obtained on 0171 482 1000.

Managing Director Philippe Gelin says: "Shorex '98 is much more than an international money show, it has become over the past three years the world's leading rendezvous for offshore providers and investors. More information and news on the offshore industry are accessible at the event than anywhere else". He adds: "Shorex '98 gives the hedge fund industry the opportunity to educate investors and advisers on the strategies used by hedge fund managers."

The exhibition and conference is sponsored by The International Herald Tribune, The Daily Telegraph, Stephenson Harwood.
