LONDON, October 22, 2019 — Arnold & Porter announced today that Dr. Beatriz San Martin has joined the firm as a partner in the Intellectual Property practice. Dr. San Martin will reside in the firm's London office.

Dr. San Martin focuses her practice on the life sciences sector and emerging/disruptive technologies. She has significant first-chair experience handling cases before the UK Courts and the Court of Justice of the European Union, including high-profile European litigation. In addition to her patent and SPC experience, she also counsels on and litigates other IP rights including copyright, trademark, passing off, design rights, database rights and confidential information. Her cases have involved a wide range of technologies including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, agrochemicals, insulation products, software, medical imaging and mosquito nets—the last of which concerned technical trade secrets and led to her involvement in the largest ever confidential information case litigated in England & Wales.

Ian Dodds-Smith, head of Arnold & Porter's London office, said: "Beatriz is a talented IP litigator with a stellar reputation and a demonstrated track record of success. Her arrival will bolster the firm's IP capabilities in the London market and enhance our premier life sciences platform. Beatriz's experience handling complex cross-border IP matters will greatly benefit our clients."

"I am delighted to join Arnold & Porter's Intellectual Property practice," said Dr. San Martin. "The team is highly regarded for its trial prowess in the life sciences sector and for successfully navigating complex patent litigation. I look forward to working with the global IP team and assisting clients in developing, licensing, and protecting all types of IP rights."

Dr. San Martin has been recognized by Chambers, which has noted that she is "much sought after as a patent litigator for her extensive knowledge of pharmaceutical patents and SPCs" and is an IP lawyer who "impresses in sophisticated patent and confidential information cases." According to Chambers, sources described her as "a very creative, thoughtful litigator" who "excels in managing complex, multi-jurisdictional cases." Other sources have described her to The Legal 500 as a "super focused IP litigator" having IP knowledge and provides "the x-factor." She has also been recognized as a WIPR Leader and ranked by IAM and in 2015 was named as one of BioBeat's 50 female "Movers and Shakers" in BioBusiness.

Fluent in Spanish, Dr. San Martin was formerly a scientist with a Wellcome Trust PhD and a postdoctoral from the University of Cambridge specializing in genetics, cellular, and molecular biology. Dr. San Martin received her BA from the University of Cambridge and earned her postgraduate diploma in Law from BPP University Law School, where she also completed a Legal Practice Course. She also has a diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Bristol University.
