The Polish Competition Authority has recently consented to two planned acquisitions in the retail market:

  • of Billa Polska by Unilec (owned by E.Leclerc)
  • of 35 discount grocery stores (part of the Bedronka chain) by Presspo

Billa Polska is a retail and wholesale seller of consumption goods owning 25 stores, mainly in the west of Poland. Its acquisition is part of the E.Leclerc chain's international expansion strategy.

The sale of stores to Presspo is related to the requirements imposed on Jeronimo Martins Dystrybucja by the Competition Authority in September 2008, when it acquired the Plus Discount. This required it to sell 38 trading posts and reduce the commercial area in three stores.
