On 20 March 2018, the Court of Justice of the European Union
relaxed its rules on the ne bis in idem principle. It may
be limited for the purpose of protecting the financial interests

limitation must not exceed what is strictly necessary to achieve
those objectives.
More information on these judgments is available in the Press release 34/18 published by the Press and
Information Unit of the Court.
