The BVI Commercial Court has announced that it will return to sitting in the BVI from January 2018.
The Commercial Court was moved to St. Lucia after sustaining damage during the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria in September. On its return to the BVI, the Commercial Court will sit with two judges: His Lordship the Honourable Mr. Justice K. Neville Adderley and His Lordship the Honourable Mr. Justice David Chivers QC.
BVI Finance announced earlier this month that organisations from BVI's business and finance sector had pledged $255,500 in support of the Commercial Court's rebuild.
According to recent BVI government reports, the Commercial Court has heard more than 100 cases since its relocation to St. Lucia.
The news was welcomed by partner Ben Mays, head of Carey Olsen's BVI litigation and dispute resolution group, who said: "It is great to see that the BVI Commercial Court will be operating back in the BVI in the new year. There has been a tremendous amount of hard work and effort put in to getting the court functioning again in Tortola following Hurricanes Irma and Maria. We are pleased we were able to offer continuity of service to our clients during this difficult time for the BVI."
