Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS)
shows that migration to the United Kingdom has hit new highs, with
650,000 migrants entering the UK in the past 12 months. Romanians
now top Indians for largest community with migrations into the
UK. Statistics show that the most common reason for coming to
the UK was employment. High levels of migration, whether in or out
of a country, can cause problems relating to unemployment and, in
some areas, a reduction or glut in a labor force.
Net migration measures the rate of people moving into a country
less the number of people moving out of the same country. In the UK
net migration is a whopping 335,000. Net migration is likely
to reduce the number of registered sponsor license holders within
the UK. This sponsor license is required when a company
wishes to employ someone from outside the European Economic Area
(EEA) and Switzerland to work for them in the UK. This will
undoubtedly lead to an increase scrutiny by the Home Office when
examining the companies who wish to acquire or already hold a
sponsor license. UK based businesses who have a sponsor
license or wish to obtain one will need to be extra vigilant when
applying for or keeping a granted license. If they do not
pass Home Office scrutiny a sponsor license may not be granted or
if they do have one that does not pass scrutiny, then the license
may be suspended or fines may be levied.
