The European Commission has approved an investment of €51 million for the Italy-Malta programme 2014-20. This project programme will enable Malta and Sicily to continue building upon projects that were started during the previous programme period 2007-13.
Beneficiaries from this fund can include SMEs and micro enterprises, newly-set up enterprises, regional and national research institutions as well as higher education institutions and universities and scientific parks. The projects will focus on areas such as research, technological development and innovation, the promotion of competitiveness, environmental protection and efficient use of resources. Any project that is undertaken must involve at least one Sicilian and one Maltese partner.
During the previous programme period, 52 Maltese beneficiaries including ministries, NGOs and local councils were involved in around 25 projects and benefitted from the allocated sum of €10 million. The 2014-20 programme is set to further improve Malta's economy through the carrying out of projects that will enhance Malta's business environment and ancillary facilities and services.
