Malta: Malta Chamber Elects New President Anton Borg

The newly elected Council of the Malta Chamber of Commerce elected Anton Borg as President today during their first meeting following the Annual General Meeting of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry held on the 24^th of March. The Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise became merged with the Malta Federation of Industry, of which Mr Borg is a past president, back in 2009.

Mr Borg dedicated his first address to pointing out the Malta Chamber's priorities for the oncoming 2-year term. His speech appealed continuity in his reference to the Economic Vision 2014-2020 that had been adopted by the previous Council as well as widely accepted by both political parties and the authorities. In Mr Borg's own words, "It is now incumbent upon the incoming Council to ensure the necessary momentum on the part of the authorities is kept in introducing the Chamber's recommendations that will lead to the enhancement of the national competitiveness needed for the Economic Vision to materialise."

Furthermore, he emphasised on the need for an inclusive leadership style, primarily by calling upon all Council members to be dynamic contributors and participants in all the work and activity carried out by the Malta Chamber as well as all its committees.

Anton Borg graduated as a member of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants in the UK in 1983 and moved on to become a member of the Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) in 1985. He sat on the Council of the MIA for 14 years serving as President for 2 years between 1997 and 1999. In addition, Mr Borg is the present Director of Elepac, Meritlink and Eurosupplies Limited.

Since 1999, when he was elected to the Federation of Industry (FOI) Council, Mr Borg has chaired various posts including that of President of the same Council for two years between 2003 and 2005. Mr Borg also served as Deputy President of the Malta Chamber in the outgoing Council, as well as represented the Malta Chamber on several boards including, but not limited to Malta Council for Economic and Social Development, Malta Enterprise, Malta Industrial Parks and Malta Business Bureau.
