CME Group To Launch Bitcoin Futures Contracts Options

The CME Group ("CME") will make available for trading options on Bitcoin futures contracts beginning on January 13, 2020, pending regulatory review.

The CME Group ("CME") will make available for trading options on Bitcoin futures contracts beginning on January 13, 2020, pending regulatory review.

As support for the decision, CME said that the Bitcoin futures market has grown significantly since its launch in December 2017. Specifically, CME noted that:

  • there is an average daily volume of 6,500 Bitcoin futures contracts in 2019 (worth approximately 32,500 Bitcoin);
  • there have been 22 successful Bitcoin futures expiration settlements;
  • there is currently trading in 3,500 individual accounts; and
  • 47 percent of the Bitcoin trading volume takes place outside the United States.
