Milbank LLP is providing pro bono support to the Commonwealth and its implementation partner on regenerative development, the Cloudburst Foundation, in its launch of Common Earth, a new international consortium aimed at collectively creating and harnessing strategies to restore the damage caused by climate change and achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

A London-based Milbank team led by partner Russell Jacobs, with associate Sarah Ullathorne and trainee Navine Hussain, is advising pro bono on the formation of Common Earth as a charity. The team is also providing support for the first-ever Common Earth Conference in London on 3 and 4 October. Presided over by the Commonwealth Secretary General, Baroness Scotland and attended by Commonwealth government ministers and climate change experts, the conference brings together environmentalists, scientists, climate change experts and indigenous groups to mark the launch of the Common Earth consortium.

The conference will look at "why strategies which are based on preserving living systems and tailored to specific locations are most effective in addressing climate change; and how to create partnerships that can harness, accelerate and scale-up their impacts," according to the Commonwealth.

Also attending the conference is Milbank special counsel Chris Taufatofua, who serves as a UN climate change negotiator for the Paris Accord for the Pacific Islands.
