Institutional investment managers expect 2018 to bring increased volatility, a continued shift towards active management and increased allocations to alternative products, according to a Natixis Investment Managers survey of 500 global institutional investors. While 72% of respondents expressed surprise that volatility remained low for so long, 78% said markets will be more volatile in 2018 and 70% think the bond market will see more volatility. Within that context, 76% of respondents stated that active management will increasingly gain popularity over passive management strategies, with increased allocations to alternative assets, including private equity, private debt, real estate and infrastructure seeing the largest boost as a result.
