The FBI on Monday dropped its legal effort to get Apple to unlock a device used by one of the San Bernardino terrorists after the agency was able to access the phone's data without the company's assistance.
With the court battle now behind them, Apple is able to turn its focus back to designing and selling consumer electronics. But while Apple may have won the battle with the FBI, there could be broader legal and business implications.
The ability of the FBI to access the data on the phone raises some questions about Apple's encryption after the company and its customers have for years touted the security of its products.
"Apple continues to improve its ability to encrypt," said Scott L. Vernick, a noted privacy attorney. "They have been down that path, and will continue. It underscores that Tim Cook has a long track record, a personal history, for strong encryption and privacy."
