FDA recently announced a funding opportunity of $19M to
states that support the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act
("FSMA") Produce Safety rule, which became final last
November and sets safety standards for the growing, harvesting,
packing, and holding of produce for human consumption. FDA solicits
applications for cooperative agreements with state regulatory
agencies that help design a plan and infrastructure to implement
the rule. The $19M allocated funds, which are available to any of
the states and territories of the United States, can be utilized
for planning, infrastructure building, training and education, and
any other related activities the states believe will support
produce safety. FDA considers collaboration with the states to be
crucial for the successful implementation of the rule and therefore
intends to allocate funds not only for fiscal year 2016 but for the
following five years as well.
