The Senate has overwhelmingly approved S. 524, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act, which includes a number of provisions to prevent drug abuse, treat addiction, and reduce overdose deaths. Major provisions include: additional prevention and education efforts to prevent opioid and heroin abuse; expanded law enforcement and first responder access to the overdose-reversal drug naloxone; additional disposal sites for unwanted prescription medications; new evidence-based opioid treatment and intervention programs, and stronger prescription drug diversion monitoring programs. The legislation now moves to the House.
