As advanced programs for detecting threats – ranging from systems that monitor data movement to specific monitoring of employee activity – continue to make data and activity easier to track, companies are continually increasing cyber programs to protect themselves from their own employees.

While risks posed by departing employees who had access to sensitive information has always been a concern, the increasingly digital workplace and digital access multiplies the damage an unhappy employee could do.

"In this day and age threats come from any number of sources, this would fall under the category of what's old is new," said Scott Vernick, a noted privacy attorney. "What is novel is the amount of harm that can be done in a short period of time, most businesses are so data driven."
