Baker Hughes, a Houston-based oilfield service company, has announced a $1 million grant to the University of Wyoming to support research on unconventional oil and gas reservoirs in Wyoming. The grant reportedly will be matched dollar for dollar by the state.

Baker Hughes has previously partnered with my alma mater on energy research and donated toward the construction of a laboratory facility to serve the University of Wyoming's energy, engineering and geology departments in the past. The newest grant funding is scheduled to be used to study the physics of oil and gas in porous media.

The vice president of technology at Baker Hughes reportedly said, "donating to universities like UW is an investment that creates value within the energy industry and encourages innovation – especially during an economic downturn...every innovation I've seen in my 25 years in the industry happens during a downturn."

This grant provides an invaluable opportunity to conduct crucial research that could provide significant benefits to the entire energy industry.
