The Vancouver Business Journal published
Clarence Belnavis article "The Inside Track: I-502 and its
impact on Oregon employers" on August 18, 2014.
In the article, Clarence advises Oregon employees to address the
consequences of marijuana use by its employees. With the passage of
Initiative 502 in 2013, Washingtonians over the age of 21 can now
purchase marijuana for recreational use. The problem is many
Oregonians are crossing into Southwest Washington to purchase
marijuana.
What does this mean for employers? Employers continue to have
legitimate reasons (zero tolerance, workplace safety, and the like)
for implementing and applying policies prohibiting employees from
using marijuana at work and for requiring that employees not have
traces of marijuana in their system, adds Clarence.
He recommends employers issue their policy in writing to applicants
and employees to avoid any confusion.
