The leaders of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee have reached a tentative agreement on a transportation spending outline that would require taxwriters to raise $96 billion in new revenue.

The receipts from the federal gas tax are expected to fall well short of funding the proposed Highway Trust Fund spending allowance. The Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means Committee would have jurisdiction over any tax title for a highway bill, but Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Chair Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., suggested the revenue could come from an "overhaul of corporate taxes."

Neither Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden, D-Ore., nor House Ways and Means Committee Chair Dave Camp, R-Mich., have announced whether they are willing to offer a tax title that would provide the revenue increases needed for the highway spending proposal.
