Shayna Balch offered the Phoenix Business Journal tips for handling tattoos and piercings in the workplace.
Tattoos and other forms of body art were once considered to be part of a counterculture. Prior to the 1980's, tattoos and uncommon piercings were a rarity with an average of 1 out of every 100 people having a tattoo or other form of body art, Shayna explained. Today, approximately 1 in 10 Americans have a tattoo, and one-third of those age 25 to 30 have tattoos or some type of atypical piercing.
While society is becoming more liberated and expressive, and piercings and tattoos are now a part of everyday life, some employers are still finding it a challenge to manage body art in the workplace.
Shayna wrote that employers should draft their dress code policies in a manner that has a justifiable business rationale and does not discriminate against particular groups (i.e. gender, race, national origin, religion, and other protected categories).
