A recent report that an Australian intelligence agency offered to share with the National Security Agency (NSA) communications between Indonesian officials and the American law firm representing them has increased fears that client communications and data at many firms could be vulnerable, leaving attorneys open to lawsuits claiming they failed to properly protect sensitive information.

"There's not a lawyer who read this article over the weekend and has clients abroad who was not thinking, 'What are the chances that our privileged communications were picked up where they were not supposed to be?'" said Scott L. Vernick, a noted privacy attorney.
