Hotels, restaurateurs and other members of the hospitality industry are facing a large amount of looming regulatory change this year, with key changes likely to hit businesses on a range of issues from pay and benefits to food safety.
The paid sick leave movement has been gaining traction in cities across the U.S., with some cities passing their own sick leave measures in recent years.
"This push has caused a lot of tension in an industry that deals with a large and often transient workforce," Carolyn Richmond said, calling the movement an "HR nightmare" for hospitality businesses with employees in different cities and states.
"It's one thing to try to comply with different state laws, but it's another to track the laws within different cities and municipalities," Richmond said. "And there is no evidence the paid sick leave movement is going to die down."
Other regulatory reforms this year could include immigration reform, reactions to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, minimum wage hikes and calorie counts.
