The Broomfield City and County Clerk's office has determined that enough signatures have been collected to put a five-year fracking ban on the November ballot in the City and County of Broomfield. The ballot initiative will ask voters to approve a five-year ban on all hydraulic fracturing in Broomfield. Voters will also be asked to prevent any liquid or solid wastes associated with hydraulic fracturing from being stored within the city and county limits.
City and County Attorney Bill Tuthill has raised concerns that a fracking ban could embroil Broomfield in lawsuits similar to those faced by Longmont, Colorado. The ballot initiative was submitted by Our Broomfield, an anti-fracking citizen group. The measure is being opposed by It's Our Broomfield, Too, a pro-fracking citizen group.
