Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's crackdown on privacy breaches after Kim Kardashian gave birth will be a model for the industry attorneys believe, after the hospital terminated six staffers following the discovery that they had violated the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).  

"This case suggests that organizations need to have stronger limitations in place to prevent snooping by users with no need to access a particular patient's records, but such safeguards will need to allow access where it is legitimately needed," said William Maruca. 

"This is more of an IT challenge than a legal one," noted Maruca. "How do you know, when a celebrity is admitted, who needs to see their records?"
