15, 2003, the GAO posted the above referenced report including "Information on National Market Share,
Physician Ownership and Patients Served."
The report finds that specialty hospitals treat somewhat healthier
patients than do full service acute care hospitals, leaving the latter
facilities to cope with a less profitable patient base. Representatives of the specialty hospital
industry, however, claim that the report is misleading. The report addresses an issue of increasing
concern to acute care hospitals and may be found at http://www.gao.gov/.
