Hedge funds and other institutional investors turn to various sources of information in connection with their investment research and diligence activities. One of the many sources of information include so-called political intelligence firms, which can provide helpful insight on legislative initiatives, regulatory developments and other political information outside of the traditional news cycle. While this sort of fact gathering can be an effective part of a firm's overall investment strategy, it also presents certain risks of exposure to insider trading liability or other forms of government scrutiny.
