On April 30, 2019 the Environmental Protection Agency issued a press release regarding the ability of the herbicide glyphosate to cause cancer in humans. In its release, the EPA stated that glyphosate "does not pose a carcinogenic hazard to humans." Its decision is scheduled to be published in the Federal Register later this summer, with public comment on it to follow. The release comes at an important time, as product liability suits against chemical manufacturer Monsanto Company regarding the weed-killer Roundup have resulted in two extremely large verdicts, one for $289,253,209 and one for more than $2,000,000,000. Both verdicts included awards for punitive damages. Monsanto is now facing numerous suits regarding its Roundup products, with plaintiffs claiming to have developed lymphomas as a result of using same.
