On August 10, the EDPS issued an opinion outlining its position on the Proposal
for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on
strengthening the security of: (i) identity cards of EU citizens;
and (ii) residence documents issued to EU citizens and their family
members exercising their right of free movement. According to the
EDPS, the proposal does not sufficiently justify the need to
process two types of biometric data (facial images and
fingerprints) in this context because the goal pursued could be
achieved using a less-intrusive approach.
