A trio of top ranking former Intel executives have decided to take on the might of Britain's software retailing giants by launching an online internet shop to cater for the ever growing army of DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) fans.

"DVD is the format that's going to take home entertainment into the 21st Century', says Brian Welsh, managing director of new Internet start-up company DVDplus, and we're going to make sure that British DVD enthusiasts get the best possible value by supplying discs at ultra-competitive prices - unlike many high street retailers....'

"Virtually all of the major big name software outlets currently selling DVDs are adding typical mark-ups of between 33% and 35% on the suggested retail prices of discs, which should range between £315.99 and £319.99,' Welsh reveals. Because DVD is a new state of the art technology, they want to see exactly how much they can get away with charging - it's bordering on the criminal, in our view.'

Unchallenged the higher prices would probably stick but DVDplus is determined not to let that happen: We'll be selling every DVD disc released in the UK from our online site at the suggested retail price,' asserts Welsh, often lower but never higher - that's a cast-iron promise' said Welsh.

DVDs look just like regular CDs but can contain up to 8 hours of near master-tape quality pictures and six-channel cinema-style Dolby Digital surround sound, making the format a fantastic medium for movies.

The discs are set to replace VHS and laserdisc as the preferred format for home entertainment. What's more, DVD players can play your existing collection of audio CDs making the new format completely backwards-compatible'.

Swindon-based DVDplus offers the latest Region 2 DVDs released in the UK 24 hours a day, seven days a week from its web address - www.dvdplus.co.uk.

The easy to navigate site also features reviews of new discs - Sky personality Richard Jobson is just one of the current contributors - previews of upcoming releases and, in the near future, video clips and trailers for forthcoming films.

All major credit and debit cards are accepted at the DVDplus site and the company has adopted the tried and tested Veri-sign' approval system to ensure secure online purchasing and confidentiality.

Discs are delivered by first class post to customers, free of charge, assuring next-day delivery in the vast majority of cases. If required, guaranteed next-day delivery can be arranged at an extra cost.

DataCash, the UK's leading provider of e-commerce payment solutions, was selected to handle the realtime credit and debit card authorisation and settlement. Using DataCash software fully integrated in to Intershop, customers can buy product securely straight from the DVDplus site using their choice of credit or debit cards. Cards are authorised in realtime - to ensure sufficient funds are available and that it has not been reported stolen - and successful transactions settled directly into DVDplus's bank account.

Gavin Breeze, managing director of DataCash commented: "Security, speed, reliability, scalability, ease of integration, flexibility and price were the determining factors in DVDplus's selection of DataCash as the payment gateway provider."
