Following the recent press coverage regarding charity fundraising, the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee (the 'Committee') has launched an inquiry to look at fundraising practices used in the charity sector.
The inquiry will focus on the following key areas:
- the extent and nature of practices adopted by call centres raising funds for charities and the impact on members of the public, particularly vulnerable people;
- the Government’s recently proposed legislative changes on this issue;
- how charities came to adopt these methods, and how they maintained proper governance; and
- the leadership of charities and how their values are reflected in their actions and activities.
The Committee will be seeking written evidence and submissions on the issue from charities and an evidence sessions is expected to be held in early September.
This enquiry is expected to run in parallel with the self-regulation review being conducted by Sir Stuart Etherington.
