- Goal-Line Technology is being used by the World Cup referees for the very first time. 14 cameras are positioned around the goal. They're connected to a computer which confirms if a goal has been scored. If it has, the referee feels a vibration in a specially-made watch that he's using and the display will say... Goal!
- The referees are using vanishing spray paint on the pitches to mark the spot for a free kick. The paint disappears after 60 seconds.
- Football referees in Scotland are not, for the purposes of the Employment Rights Act 1996, employees of the Scottish Football Association. Lady Stacey's EAT decision provides a great insight into a referee's work (as well as providing an analysis of employment status...)
