Background

The Economic Impact of British Racing 2013 report assesses the economic footprint of the British Racing industry in the four years up to and including 2012, following on from previous studies the Group carried out in 2005 and 2009. The report sets out the industry's expenditure, taxation, capital investment, employment and positions British Racing within the wider sports, leisure, rural and international racing economies.

Key findings

The report determines that the industry has a core expenditure of over £1.1 billon and a total economic impact of £3.45 billion. The industry has been resilient to the challenging economic conditions since our last report in 2009. Racing remains the second biggest sport in Britain by many measures (after football) including attendance, with 5.6 million people going racing in 2012.
