Employment Relations Minister, Jo Swinson, yesterday announced the following proposed changes to collective redundancies rules in redundancy situations:

  • Where 100 redundancies or more are contemplated, it is proposed that the minimum period of collective consultation will be reduced from 90 days to 45 days and;
  • Employees on fixed term contracts which have reached the 'end of their natural life' will be excluded from the obligations in terms of collective consultation.

The proposed implementation date for these changes is 6 April 2013.

This is part of the government's proposals to simplify employment law.
