This morning the British Council of Offices (BCO) launched the BCO guide Good Practice in the Selection of Construction Materials 2011 at the offices of CMS Cameron McKenna LLP. The event was chaired by Mark Heighton, Head of the Real Estate and Construction Sector Group, who welcomed as speakers Paul Edwards, Head of Sustainability at Hammerson; Nick Cullen, Principal of Hoare Lea's Research and Development Group; and Cara Tissandier, Hoare Lea Sustainability.

The new guide updates the original Good Practice in the Selection of Construction Materials issued in 1997, which is widely referred to in specifications, building contracts and professional consultants' appointments. The 2011 guide also provides broader information on the industry's twelve most commonly used materials and reflects the growing importance of environmental issues in this area.

For those who refer to the original 1997 publication Good Practice in the Selection of Construction Materials in their contracts, now is a good time to consider whether to update those references.

Vicky Elsdon was involved reviewing the Good Practice in the Selection of Construction Materials 2011 for the BCO.
