We have received reports that the "SSL KOLKATA ", a 2007 built container vessel flying the Indian flag, has suffered a major explosion and fire on the 13th June. The crew have abandoned the vessel and 70% of the vessel was affected by the fire.
We understand that the international salvors Smit are contracted on LOF terms. Salvage assets are being mobilised. It is likely that there will be claims for salvage and GA as well as recovery of PA losses. The claim for LOF salvage will be subject to English law and London arbitration. Whilst the vessel was on a domestic trade, it is likely that there will also be contracts of carriage with international shipping lines.
