Voluntary public health 'responsibility deals' between government and industry body, the Food Network, aims to provide consumers with the information needed to make healthier choices. There is great importance given to allowing greater consumer choice through the provision of information on both health and sustainability, most recently via the return of the proposal for the provision of nutritional information on restaurant menus. Other plans include a push to reduce salt intake to below 6g/day for an adult, from the estimated current average of 8.6g/day, and to eliminate trans-fats altogether.

A previous trial voluntary scheme introduced by Labour in 2009 collapsed within months, with only five operators still offering calories on menus, although many are now offering nutritional information on their brands' websites.
