Phil Hamzik, an associate in Wolf Greenfield’s Pharmaceutical Practice, has been recognized on WIPR Diversity's Top 100 People in IP list. Phil is part of the trailblazer category, which celebrates outstanding people with a decade or less of experience in the IP industry who have already made their mark on the sector. He is one of just 21 people in the US – both at laws firms and in-house – to be recognized in this category.

“Our 2024 trailblazers stand out due to their impressive practice in IP and/or their determination to promote D&I within the sector,” according to WIPR.

Phil helps clients build and manage US and international patent portfolios in the areas of pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. He regularly secures comprehensive patent protection on behalf of clients, including patents covering clinical development candidates and pharmaceutical products. From protecting key platform technologies to advising on drug product life cycle management, Phil works closely with clients to develop IP strategies aligned with their business goals.

In addition to his daily practice, Phil is dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community.

“As a gay attorney – one who is privileged to have the support of my firm, my colleagues, and my community – I am motivated to give back on three essential fronts: in my own practice, as a member of my firm, and as a member of the broader IP and LGBTQ+ communities,” said Phil.

He is active in leading causes that support those traditionally underrepresented both in the law and by the law, working with various legal and LGBTQ+ specific organizations. For instance:

  • Phil is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association.
  • He is an active member of OUTbio, the biotech industry’s largest LGBTQ+ professionals group.
  • He serves as chair of Wolf Greenfield’s LGBTQ+ Affinity Group.
  • He currently co-chairs the Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) Associates Fund Drive. He previous served as co-captain of Wolf Greenfield’s efforts for three consecutive years. Each year, he helped lead Wolf Greenfield in raising more than any other firm participating in the drive. These funds support the GBLS Family Law Unit, which provides free civil legal aid to low-income survivors of domestic violence.
  • He is an alumni member of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD).
