Whilst the terms "cryptocurrency" and
"Bitcoin" have become increasingly commonplace within the
Island, especially given the successful growth of Digital
Jersey, there remains a degree of confusion and concern within the
financial services industry over the operation and regulation of
digital currencies.
Baker & Partners are delighted to host a half-day conference,
led by Federico Paesano of the Basel Institute on Governance, as a
guide to Jersey's current position regarding the regulation and
operation of cryptocurrencies, the characteristics and innovations
that underpin the technology, and worldwide approaches to
legislation.
Federico has spoken on behalf of the International Centre for
Asset Recovery on the worldwide regulation of cryptocurrencies
at key events, including most recently at the World Bank StAR
Initiative International Conference in Vienna.
Federicos's presentation will cover the following aspects of
cryptocurrencies:
- Introduction to decentralised vs. centralised systems
- Cryptocurrencies' characteristics and innovations
- The Bitcoin network and its technology
- The Bitcoin backbone: the blockchain
- Cryptocurrencies and regulation: the players involved
- Examples of proposed legislation
- Investigations and Asset Recovery: new challenges
- Case study: SilkRoad
The conference will close with a discussion and Q&A
session amongst a panel comprised of local digital and regulatory
experts; who will debate the opportunities and challenges for
Jersey as a developing FinTech jurisdiction.
The event is designed not only for those working within the
digital industry, but senior professionals within financial
services businesses who desire a better understanding of this
growing and important sector of Jersey's economy.
