The Government of India proposes to enact long term policies and scheme for providing the necessary impetus for installing solar power plants with more than 1 lakh MW capacity in India. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has revised of the target of renewable energy capacity to 1,75,000 MW by 2022, which includes capacity addition of 1,00,000 MW solar power, 60,000 MW wind power, 10,000 MW biomass power and 5,000 MW small hydro power.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in order to pave the way for the capacity boost has also launched following new schemes in this regard:

1. 1000 MW by Central PSUs and Government of India organizations;

2. 300 MW by establishments of defence and para military forces;

3. 25 solar parks of aggregate capacity 20,000 MW;

4. 100 MW pilot-cum-demonstration project for development of grid connected solar pv power plants on canal banks (50 MW) and canal tops (50 MW);

5. 1 lakh solar pumps; and

6. 10 MW Pilot Projects for Solarization of Indo-Pak Border.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy contemplates to come up with a detailed plan of action to achieve the target of 100 GW by 2022 shortly. The target of 100 GW will however broadly consist of 40 GW grid connected rooftop projects and 60 GW large and medium size land based solar power projects.
