CFTC Division of Clearing and Risk ("DCR") Director Brian Bussey will retire from the agency.

Mr. Bussey had a 22-year career in service to the federal government that included a series of senior positions at the SEC before he joined the CFTC. Mr. Bussey has been DCR Director at the CFTC since 2017. In that role he was responsible for overseeing the DCR's "legal, domestic and international policy, risk surveillance, and examinations programs." Prior to that, Mr. Bussey filled various senior positions at the SEC, including as Associate Director in the Division of Trading and Markets, and acting Counselor to three different former SEC Chairmen.

Mr. Bussey is expected to leave the CFTC in July.

Commentary / Steven Lofchie

Mr. Bussey is the model of what you want in a regulator: smart, hardworking, keen to understand the details of how markets work, and focused on establishing rules to make them work better. That CFTC Chair Giancarlo went to the considerable effort of hiring Mr. Bussey away from the SEC after having worked with him on various joint CFTC/SEC rulemaking projects reflects the high regard with which he was held in the regulatory community.
