(Update Issue Number 8 Autumn/Winter 1996)

John Darwood (pictured) has been appointed Senior Adviser in the Insurance Division of the Financial Services Commission, a position he will hold for the next two years.

Formerly Head of the Insurance Section of the Cayman Islands Financial Supervision Department, Mr Darwood's brief includes deputising for Steve Butterworth, helping with the development of Guernsey's insurance sector, liaising with new and existing insurers on underwriting matters and helping with supervisory training.

Steve Butterworth says Mr Darwood's familiarity with the American captive insurance industry and his worldwide contacts will be especially useful to the division.

Mr Darwood left the London insurance market in 1980 to become the first Insurance Commissioner in the Cayman Islands. He briefly worked in the Bermuda insurance market before returning to regulation as Insurance Adviser to the Bahamian government. Later he was manager of the Non-Admitted Insurers Information Office (now International Insurers' Department) at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' headquarters in Kansas City.
