John Darwood, currently head of the Insurance Section of the Cayman Islands Financial Services Supervision Department has been appointed Senior Advisor in the Insurance Division at the Guernsey Financial Services Commission for a period of two years.

His primary duty will be to liase with new and existing insurers on underwriting matters and to help train the Insurance division's existing personnel in regulatory skills. He will with Senior Analyst, Diane Potter, deputise for Steve Butterworth in his absence and assist with the development of the Guernsey insurance sector.

Steve Butterworth says that "in Guernsey, we strive for excellence and this appointment will help us to achieve our aim. I have worked for John Darwood in the early eighties and have had a close working relationship since then. I know that he bring with him considerable supervisory skills and will also be using his familiarity with the American captive insurance industry and his many world-wide contacts in order to develop prudently the insurance sector".

John Darwood left the London insurance market in 1980 to take up an appointment as the Cayman Islands first Insurance Commissioner and, apart from a brief spell in the Bermuda market, has been involved in insurance regulation ever since. Immediately prior to his second term in Cayman he was manager of the Non-Admitted Insurers Information Office (now International Insurers Department) at the National Association of Insurance Commissioner's headquarters in Kansas City, United States of America. Before that he was Insurance Advisor to the Bahamian Government.

It is hoped Mr Darwood will take up his appointment early in September.
