The Department of Merchant Shipping (DMS) has announced that EU Directive 2015/559/EC of April 9 2015, amending EU Directive 96/98/EC on marine equipment, has been transposed into Cyprus law by the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Order of 20161 and the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Notification of 2016,2 issued under the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Laws 2002 to 2006.3

The Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Order replaces Schedule A of the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Laws with a new Schedule A. The new Schedule A is identical to Annex A of EU Directive 2015/559/EC. The Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Notification sets out the equipment covered by Section 6(3) of the marine equipment laws, allowing equipment to continue to be placed on the market and on board ships until April 30 2018 if it was manufactured in accordance with the procedures for type approval already in force before the adoption of the directive.

EU member states are required to apply EU Directive 2015/559/EC from April 30 2016. Consequently, the DMS will implement the order and the notification from that date.
