The Department of Merchant Shipping (DMS) has announced that Commission Directive (EU) 2015/559 of April 9, 2015, amending Council Directive 96/98/EC on marine equipment, has been transposed into Cyprus law by the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Order (P.I 92/20161) of 2016 and the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Notification (P.I 91/20162) of 2016 (the Notification), issued under the Merchant Shipping (Marine Equipment) Laws 2002 – 2006 (Law 55(I)/2002 as amended).

The Order replaces Schedule A of the Marine Equipment Laws with a new Schedule A, which is identical in text to Annex A of Directive 2015/559. The Notification sets out the equipment covered by section 6(3) of the Marine Equipment Laws, allowing equipment to continue to be placed on the market and on board ships until April 30 2018 if it was manufactured before 30 April 2016 in accordance with procedures for type-approval already in force.

EU member states are required to apply Directive (EU) 2015/559 from April 30 2016 and consequently the DMS will implement the Order and the Notification from that date.
