The Cayman Islands Government is to make two and three year work permits standard practice with immediate effect. Following a public review of its immigration practice, the CI Government has extended permits from one to three years for senior and specialist grade employees, and two years for all other workers.

In addition to the extension of work permits, an ongoing review on immigration will:

  • reduce the turn-around on work applications to two-weeks
  • introduce a system to provide approval-in-principle in advance of overseas advertising for and recruiting of senior and top-management personnel
  • abolish the need for some categories of workers to take a mandatory six-month break in residency.

These refinements are part of the Cayman Islands Government's strong commitment to foster and maintain a favourable and stable business climate conducive to inward investment.

Note to Editors:

Work permits are only issued in cases where suitably trained and experienced Caymanians are not available and are tied to a careful monitoring system of training and education programmes at the workplace to ensure the appropriate progression of qualified Caymanians.
