The Canadian Intellectual Property Organization today released for comment their draft regulations designed to implement amendments to the Trademarks Act passed in 2014, including elimination of use as a registration requirement, as well as international trademark treaties, including the Madrid Protocol in Canada. The amendments impact filing requirements, registration term, fees, opposition and cancellation proceedings, and international filing procedures. CIPO has set a term ending July 21, 2017 for filing of comments to the Regulations. Stay tuned for more developments.
