Miller Thomson's National Health Industry Group is pleased to announce the third edition of Essential Law for Social Work Practice in Canada.

Individuals who need social work services have problems that are complex and multifaceted. To best serve their clients, social workers need a quick way to access legal information in a broad range of practice areas.

Co-authored by leaders in the field, Essential Law for Social Work Practice in Canada examines major legal issues encountered in social work practice, including consent and capacity in health care, mental illness, human rights, child protection, adoption and surrogacy, professional regulation, documentation, and the interaction of social work and the legal system.

Since its initial publication in 2006, Essential Law for Social Work Practice in Canada has been widely recognized as a go-to resource for social work practitioners and has been used in post-secondary institutions across Canada.

About the Authors:

Cheryl Regehr is the vice-president and provost for the University of Toronto. She is a professor in the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work and the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto. Her practice background includes 20 years of direct service in forensic social work and emergency mental health and in the administration of mental health programs.

Karima Kanani is a Partner in Miller Thomson LLP's National Health Industry Group who acts as General Legal Counsel to health care and social service organizations. She has been named as one of the "Best of the New Generation" of lawyers by Precedent Magazine and a "Leading Canadian Lawyer to Watch" by Lexpert Magazine.

Jesstina McFadden is a lawyer in Miller Thomson LLP's National Health Industry Group. She regularly advises health care and social service organizations and professionals on a wide variety of issues including consent, capacity, and substitute decision-making; health information and privacy; mental health and health professional regulation.

Michael Saini is an associate professor and holds the endowed chair of Law and Social Work at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto. For the past 15 years, Michael has been conducting custody evaluations and assisting children's counsel for the Office of the Children's Lawyer, Ministry of the Attorney General in Ontario.
