The knee jerk reaction of Americans appeared to be to start looking for a way out on Tuesday night, as Donald Trump shocked the world by beating Hillary Clinton in the US election.

The Canadian government website of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada crashed, apparently under the weight of the number of Americans researching how they can make the move north, before Trump makes the move into the White House.

Immigration.ca's message to Americans is clear: Canada's doors are open to the right kind of new permanent residents. So, if you are serious about wanting to move here, your options are laid out below.

The good news is the Canadian federal government has just announced plans to maintain record immigration levels in 2017.
