The Canada federal prosecution service, which prosecutes tax evasion cases in court has released statistics on the number of tax evasion prosecutions brought to court. The number of tax evasion prosecutions is down by almost one half across Canada in the past three years between 2012-13 and 2014-15. For example, in Ontario tax fraud prosecutions fell to 47 from 119 three years earlier. CRA attributed the decline in prosecutions to a new focus on complex cases. Taxpayers who have unreported income should make a voluntary disclosure to CRA prior to the commencement of any audit in order to avoid tax evasion prosecution.
