The energy industry in Canada depends on its skilled and experienced engineers and geoscientists for the management of its operations and for business continuity. This is no less true in these economic times when companies are under increasing regulator and public scrutiny to continue to maintain good safety records. But how do you ensure that your investment in individuals important to your business lasts, and how do the individuals ensure that they maintain career progression and productivity?

Engineers Canada and Geoscientists Canada have recently published a joint guide to help businesses and their people. The guide, Managing Transitions: Before, During and After Leave, makes recommendations to businesses and individuals and contains a useful, practical checklist against which current practices could be measured.

The foundational document on which this national guide is based was created by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists Alberta.

According to the guide, women continue to remain underrepresented in the engineering and geoscientist professions. The guide is a good resource for businesses who value retention of skilled talent and increased workplace diversity, and for individuals who are about to take maternity or parental leaves, who are currently on such leaves or who are about to return to the workplace.
